Turn Off "Hidden Gems" From Google Maps

Are You Tired Of Getting "Hidden Gems" Pop Up Recommendations in Maps? Yea, so are a lot of people.

---

Some months back, I suddenly started getting all these pop-up notices about "Hidden Gems" from Google Maps. I don't know what they're thinking. Maybe they're trying to support business partners or something like that. I get it. Make businesses happy, they stay happy with you. Either way, I never really click with what they suggest to or for me and to be honest, I don't need yet one more notice from my phone!

Google Maps shoves around 40-50 different kinds of notifications in their nested set of options under 10 different categories in their app.

So how do we get rid of these pop-up notice things?

  • Open Google Maps,
  • Press the three-dashes in the upper left of the app,
  • Select 'Settings,'
  • Select 'Notifications,'
  • Select 'Discovery' and boom, look at all those options that somehow, turned themselves on!

Let's see...

  • 'Rising foodie stars:' No, don't care.
  • 'New places:' Nope, don't care about when new places open up around me.
  • 'New business posts:' Not sure I need to know about posts from places I follow. I'm already following them, so I'll see them when I need or want to. Right?
  • 'New Match for you:' I am pretty sure they have yet to figure me out enough to suggest places to me. They haven't been even close yet.
  • Don't care about 'Suggested lists.' What lists are they even talking about?
  • 'Saved places near you:' LOL... Know when you're near your saved places. Um... that makes no sense to me and seems redundant.
  • 'Travel suggestions:' I do not want to be told where to travel to.
  • 'Trending places:' I'm not a trendy kind of guy, so, um, nope!
  • 'Upcoming events:' If I am active in my community, I will already know. Simple as that!

And there you have it, no more nagging updates from your phone, at least from Google Maps.  For now. If you look under 'People and places,' you'll see a ton more options that have been turned on 'for you!' Have at!!

So if for some reason turning off all these 'helpful' notifications doesn't not silence the pop-up that keeps bugging you, poke around under Settings and Notifications.  Under the Contributions tab, you can turn off the inquiries to answer a few questions about places you visit. There's also a slightly drastic option of turning off location tracking.

Of course, if we can somehow turn off that f*ing "Explore 'your city' pop up drawer every time you start the app, that would be super bonus, wouldn't it? At this point in time, it doesn't look like there is an option to get rid of that hazardous option. But soon, I hope.
